ComproTax began in 1982 when co-founder Jackie E. Mayfield saw that families were being underserved by insurance and tax professionals alike. Originally focused on insurance, Jackie introduced the idea of offering tax services as a way to better support communities financially.
By early 1983, a small group of entrepreneurs—many from insurance and real estate—began preparing tax returns using early personal computers and tax software, long before it was common in the industry. These early pioneers worked as individual sole proprietors united under a common name.
To grow the business and expand access to tax services, they launched the first tax training course in the summer of 1983—a free 18-week, in-person class for new preparers. The success of that first course sparked a movement. ComproTax grew nationwide with more instructors, updated material, and online education.
In 1984, ComproTax officially became a corporation—TRS Computax, Inc.—uniting founders under a formal business structure with shared investment and vision. The name “Computax”, was introduced to us by one of the members of the Board of Directors, Leo P. Flood, Jr., and initially appeared to be available based on a statewide search in Texas conducted by a retained attorney. Unfortunately, this search failed to detect that “Computax” was a federally registered trademark.
President Yusuf A. Muhammad devised a new name: COMPRO-TAX, a blend of “COMplete” and “PROfessional,” which retained the essence of the original brand while ensuring it was catchy, descriptive, and not too different from what we had been using all along. The transition was made official on November 12, 1985.
If you are reading this history, you are a part of it. Hopefully you will be an integral part — one that we will note some day to be priceless and indispensable. You are best qualified to map out and carve out your place on the pages of history for this great organization. Yet, we cannot and as such, will not undervalue the importance of working together as a team. Because Together Everyone really does Achieve More!
